War Memorial (10/28-29)
6 Princeton sailors would travel up to Ithaca to compete in the MAISA Co-ed Fleet Racing Conference Championships. Ossian Kamal ‘26 and Skylor Wong ‘26 would sail in the A boat while Asher Green ‘24 and Virginia Cobbs ‘25 would start off in B. Reserve Sailors Jasper Waldman ‘25 and Chai Mauliola ‘24 stayed ready and locked in for when Coach Fraser would give them the nod.
Conditions on Saturday were breezy, and cold, with scattered periods of rain. After a 30+knot squall rolled through a 15-18 knot NW breeze would stabilize for a long day of racing. Throughout the first 3 sets, a heavy line sag would have boats that started from the middle fighting for their lives in the first half of beat 1. A pulsing breeze coming through the middle right would allow a few boats who bailed out of their starting lane early a chance to round mark 1 in a decent position. However, boats that managed to punch out off the start on starboard tack and sail to the left shift would without failure come around mark 1 in the top 5. Sailors Kamal and Wong would manage to execute this strategy a number of times throughout the day and come off the water having sailed a decent day. Sailors Green and Cobbs would struggle to get off the line in the first set making it all the more difficult to climb through a fleet of this caliber. The breeze would simmer down throughout the day which would make for an even stronger favor for the course left. Tigers would finish off the day in 16th overall, hoping for more breeze to come on Sunday to finish off the regatta. Sunday’s conditions were light which had sailors postponed on shore for most of the day. A 4-6kt Northerly filled-in at 1:30 p.m. would rush sailors onto the water to sail a final set to finish off the event. Sailors Green and Cobbs would bounce back finishing with a 5, 11 set that would help propel the team into 15th place above the Christopher Newport University Captains.
Thank you to Coach Lavie and everyone at Cornell for a great weekend of competition to cap off a great fall season.
